How To Get On Reality TV

by Dan Gheesling

How you’ll feel after you get a callback!

1. Act as if.  Shoot your video or enter the casting call with confidence. Amp yourself up and approach it with a nothing to lose attitude. Robyn Kass can smell desperation a mile away. (Thanks Ben Affleck NSFW!)

2. Have ONE compelling story ready to go. Don’t memorize your story but have one of your best personal stories ready to tell. Have a beginning, middle, and ending to your story. Don’t rehearse it, tell your story like you would to a friend. Make sure the closing of your story has some bang to it.

3. Know your role. Define yourself for the Casting Director. If you are a geek, say so, and state why. If you are a jock, admit to it. Don’t walk away from the video or casting call unsure of the role you are going to be cast in. Define who you are, don’t leave it open to interpretation.

Hey thank your for answering my previous question. I appreciate it! I actually had another question. I realized that the casting for Big Brother 15 has already started. They are taking online submissions as of currently and will start casting calls sometime in March. Is it wise to go on ahead and send a video as early as possible or wait a little bit?

Send your video in whenever you think it is 100% done! :)

Thank you Dan for the guidance, advice and CDN discount! Toronto open call is on Sunday and I just bought your guide book for some last minute tips.

Do you think there is realistically a spot on the show for someone who isn’t necessarily super-outgoing or crazy but understands the game/show.

Thanks Adeel! Yes there is a realistic spot, but you have to develop your character in a certain way if you are not “crazy” or “super-outgoing.” I am neither of those, so I had to play some things up to get on the show.

Can you be a bit more specific: What should be developed to sell yourself to the producers?

Yes: you need to sell them who you are, through stories that highlight certain personality traits that you have. :)

Hey Mr. Gheesling :P
Thank you so much for the Coupon Code special! It’s really great to see you appreciate your Canadian fans! I just finished reading through the Step by Step guide! It’s super awesome and really helped me realize how little I understood about the casting process. I’m going to the final casting call for Big Brother Canada in Toronto this Sunday so hopefully all of your advice pays off (fingers crossed). Thanks again for writing and publishing this book for people like myself who are pretty average and for the constant tips and updates on your site. Team Dan all the way!

Hey Dan!!
You were robbed!! Jannel was right – total travesty if you didn’t win – and it was!! Amazing game play brother! Question – If you made a mistake years ago and it resulted in no criminal record but you were charged, mugshot, finger print etc. You get your slap on wrist – no record. Do you confess at any point – will they understand and recognize you’re not defined by your mistakes. Will they look at where you are at now and how well you’re doing – a total 360 and still give you a shot?

Brad, I would just be open about that situation. It is basically a legal issue, which is a non issue, if you are not a convicted felon. Honesty is the best policy when dealing with your background in casting.
